The Relationship between Productivity and Office Design

Workplace productivity is one of the most crucial factors to consider when running a business. After all, the performance of your employees has a direct impact on your company’s success, so you want them at the top of their game at all times.

Now, several things can affect workplace productivity, one of which is the workplace itself. If you want your workers to perform efficiently constantly, you want to avoid these top mistakes when designing your office:

1. Insufficient Lighting

Before you even think about investing in office furnishings or decorations, make sure that your workplace has adequate lighting. It is one of the most basic requirements for improving workplace productivity and preventing eye fatigue, headaches, and other complications.

If a room doesn’t have sufficient natural lighting, you can get lamps or fluorescent bulbs to provide more light. This will make your employees feel more comfortable and boost their productivity.

2. No Breathing Room

Next, make sure you provide enough space for your workers to move around and breathe. Managing and working in a cramped office can be very disconcerting, to say the least.

If you want to boost workplace productivity, make sure that your workers have enough space to do their job properly. Common sense dictates that you should never cram people into a small cubicle unless they’re working on a project that requires increased collaboration.

3. Lack of Break Areas

Additionally, it would be best to make sure that your employees have places to relax and unwind after working for a long time. Working for long periods without breaks is counterproductive to workplace productivity, as it can lead to negative emotions, like resentment, frustration, and the like.

Ideally, you should have a break room or lounge in your office where employees can relax and unwind for a few minutes. Of course, you don’t need to have a full-blown break room. You can provide a private corner in your office that your workers can use to relax and unwind.

4. Uncomfortable Office Chairs

If you want to boost your employees’ productivity, you want to make sure they are as comfortable as possible while they work. One of the best ways to do this is to invest in comfortable office chairs.

Although they aren’t exactly essential to office morale, they can make a huge difference in how productive your workers are.

5. Noise Pollution

Finally, one of the worst things for office morale is exposing your workers to constant noise. There’s a reason why so many offices today have thick partitions and soundproof walls: noise pollution can significantly affect your workers’ morale, which, in turn, affects productivity.

For example, if your office is located in a busy street, you can use soundproof windows to keep outside noise at bay. Additionally, you can provide your workers with noise-cancelling headphones or headsets to prevent exposure to overbearing noise.

How Can You Address These Workplace Mistakes?

If you have the budget to spend for it, you can always find another office space to move into. Doing so allows you to create a creative office space conducive to your workplace productivity.

It’s worth noting, though, that not everyone has the funds to find another office space. If you’re the same, you may want to consider a collaborative office space in the meantime as you work towards redesign, renovations, or a new office space.
